... begann seine Theaterlaufbahn als Schauspieler.
Nach ersten Regiearbeiten in Köln folgten Inszenierungen bei Peter Palitzsch in Frankfurt (u.a. Antigone von Hölderlin nach Sophokles), bei Claus Peymann in Stuttgart und am Deutschen Schauspielhaus Hamburg (u.a. Der Hofmeister von Lenz und Shakespeares Titus Andronicus). Weitere Stationen sind u.a. Bochum, Berlin, Basel, Hannover und Hamburg.
Darüber hinaus finden auch Nels interdisziplinäre und experimentelle Arbeiten große Beachtung, darunter das choreographierte Theater Thränen des Vaterlandes (1986, gemeinsam mit Heiner Goebbels und der Company von William Forsythe), das Kleist-Projekt Wortpest sowie das Freud-Projekt Wunderblock II mit Studenten der Theaterwissenschaft und geistig behinderten Laien am TAT Frankfurt.
Seit den 80er Jahren inszeniert Christof Nel auch Musiktheater: u.a. Der Freischütz (1983), Falstaff und Die verkaufte Braut (1985) und Wagners Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (1993) an der Oper Frankfurt, sowie Nonos Intolleranza 1960 und die Uraufführung von Rolf Riehms Schweigen der Sirenen an der Staatsoper Stuttgart und Azio Corghis Divara an der Nationaloper Lissabon. Es folgte Thomas Bernhards Alte Meister sowie Elfriede Jelineks Sportstück am Hamburger Schauspielhaus (1998), Die Walküre an der Staatsoper in Stuttgart (1999), Strauss’ Salome (1999) an der Oper Frankfurt, Der Freischütz (2000) an der Komischen Oper Berlin, Strauss’ Die Frau ohne Schatten an der Oper Frankfurt und Carl Amadeus Hartmanns Simplicius Simplicissimus in Stuttgart.
Für die RUHRtriennale 2004 erarbeitete Christof Nel zusammen mit Mauricio Kagel das TheaterKonzert.
Mehrere seiner Schauspiel-Inszenierungen wurden zum Berliner Theatertreffen und zu verschiedenen Festivals eingeladen. Zuletzt gelangte Idomeneo, Re di Creta von Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart an der Oper Köln in der Regie von Christof Nel zur Premiere.

... began his theater run as an actor.
After directing his first work in Cologne he worked on productions with Peter Palitzsch in Frankfurt (among others Antigone from Holderlin to Sophokles), with Claus Peymann in Stuttgart and at Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg (among other things Lenz’s The Tutor and Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus). Further stations include Bochum, Berlin, Basel, Hanover and Hamburg.
In addition, Nel’s interdisciplinary and experimental work have drawn a lot of attention, including the choreographed theater Tears of the Fatherland (together with Heiner Goebbels and the company of William Forsythe), the Kleist Project “Wortpest” as well as the Freud Project “Wunderblock II,” with students of theater science and mentally handicapped laymen at the TAT Frankfurt.

It was followed by Thomas Bernhard’s Alte Meister and Elfriede Jelinek’s Sportstück at the Hamburger Schauspielhaus (1998), Die Walküre at the State Opera in Stuttgart (1999), Strauss' Salome (1999) at the Frankfurt Opera, Der Freischütz (2000) Strauss' The Woman Without Shadows at the Opera Frankfurt and Carl Amadeus Hartmann's Simplicius Simplicissimus in Stuttgart.
For the RUHRtriennale in 2004, Christof Nel worked with Mauricio Kagel to design the Theaterkonzert.
Several of his acting productions were invited to the Berlin theatertreffen and to various festivals. In addition, his productions of Idomeneo, Re di Creta by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at the Cologne Opera, directed by Christof Nel premiered.
