Florian Vaßen completed his studies in Frankfurt am Main, Aix-en-Provence and Marburg in German Studies, Romance Philology, Philosophy, and History. He received his Ph.D. in 1970 and then went on to become an assistant at the Justus-Liebig-University in Gießen. 1972 Vaßen went to the Leibniz University of Hannover, and from 1989 until his retirement in 2009 he was a professor for Contemporary German Literature within the German seminar at the Leibniz University of Hannover. He was head of the unit „Arbeitsstelle Theater – Theaterpädagogik“ and of the Course of studies Performing Arts until 2009. He is a co-founder and editor of the “Journal for Theater Pedagogy. Correspondence” from 1985 until today. From 1984, Vaßen has been a chairman in the Society for Theater Pedagogy in Lower Saxony and since 1986 was a co-founder and temporary speaker of the Literature Board in Lower Saxony. From 1992 until 1996 Vaßen was a chairman for the Literature Office of Hannover and from 1991 until the end of 2005 was a member of a panel of judges for the Gerrit-Engelke-Prize of the City of Hannover. In 1996, Vaßen worked as a visiting professor at the University de São Paulo and from 2007 until 2001 was a chairman of the Dringenberger Circle. Member of the Academic Advisory Board of ForumVormärzForschung; Member of the Executive Board of the International Heiner Müller Society from 2013 to 2020, from 2020 member of its Board of Trustees.
Florian Vaßen’s fields of work and research include: drama and theater, theatricality, theater pedagogy in theory and praxis, writing and pictures, literature and experiment, pre-march literature (literature pre-dating the March Revolutions of 1848), laughter theory, satire and caricature, Bertolt Brecht, and Heiner Müller.
